João Granja is a Professor of Accounting at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His research examines how accounting information and the regulatory enforcement of accounting standards shape financial stability and access to credit. His papers have appeared in leading journals including the Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies and his work has been covered by the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Bloomberg News.

Granja earned a B.Sc. in economics from the Universidade do Porto and an M.Sc. in economics from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon. Before entering academia, he consulted on projects that used financial statements to evaluate the efficiency of regulated industries in Portugal. He completed his PhD in accounting at Chicago Booth in 2013 and was an assistant professor at MIT's Sloan School of Management before joining Booth in 2016.
