Welcome to the 2024 Conference!
The 2024 planning committee welcomes registered attendees to the 12th annual Community Banking Research Conference.
Please note: The conference will offer a livestream on communitybanking.org through the entirety of the conference. A recording of the conference will be posted at a later date.
The conference, co-sponsored by the Federal Reserve System, the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Central time on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, and from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Central time on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

2024 CSBS Annual Survey of Community Banks | Oct. 2 at 9:30 a.m. CT
The first day of the conference features the release and discussion of key findings from the 2024 CSBS Annual Survey of Community Banks. Since 2014, the national survey has provided insights into the opportunities and challenges that banks faced during the previous year.
2024 CSBS Community Bank Case Study Presentation | Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. CT
Commonwealth University in Mansfield, Pa., is the winning team of this year’s CSBS Community Bank Case Study Competition. The team will present at 4 p.m. CT on Oct. 2. This year, student teams partnered with local community banks to explore topics related to 2023 bank failures, including expected regulatory and supervisory changes, as well as how banks are using social media.
Panel Discussion: The Future of the Community Bank Business Model | Oct. 3 at 10:45 a.m. CT
This year’s panel discussion will again be moderated by “FDIC Podcast” host Brian Sullivan, who will delve into how banks are preparing for the future of community banking. The panelists will include:
- Shaza Andersen, Founding Member and CEO, Trustar Bank, Great Falls, Va.
- William "Billy" Carroll, president and CEO, SmartBank, Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
- Tom Leavitt, president and CEO, Northfield Savings Bank, Northfield, Vt.
Research Paper Sessions, Moderators and Discussants
Nine academic papers were selected to be presented at this year’s conference. Authors of the selected papers will present during one of three moderated panels being held throughout the conference.
The first session and panel, “Community Banks and the Local Economy,” will be moderated by Greg Nini, associate professor of finance at the LeBow College of Business, Drexel University. The community bank discussant will be T. Corey Neil, president and CEO of the Bank of Tampa in Tampa, Fla.
The second session and panel, “Deposit Stability,” will be moderated by Matthew Plosser, financial research advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The community bank discussant will be Mary Willis, president and CEO of Fidelity Bank in Fuquay-Varina, N.C.
The third session and panel, “Consumer Protection,” will be moderated by Anne Beatty, Deloitte & Touche Chair of Accounting at the Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University. The community bank discussant will be Orvin “Orv” Kimbrough, chairman and CEO of Midwest BankCentre in St. Louis.
Two additional papers were identified and will be featured online and as poster presentations at the conference. A list of all papers and the complete agenda can be found on the conference website.
As part of her second day closing remarks that start at 11:45 a.m. CT, Karen Lawson, EVP, CSBS, will announce the winner of the "John W. Ryan Award for Most Significant Contribution to Community Banking Research."
